Most garden maintenance prices you will find for Auckland are somebody else's estimate, built by multiplying an hourly rate out into a per-visit figure. Cost depends on your garden, not a market average.
Two properties of a similar size can take genuinely different amounts of time, so the useful thing is not a number. It is knowing what moves the number, which is what lets you read any quote you are given.
What actually moves the price
- Growth rate and plant mix. Usually the biggest factor. Auckland's warm, humid climate suits fast subtropical growers like palms, gingers and bird of paradise, which need cutting back every visit. Slower natives such as corokia, griselinia and coprosma hold their shape far longer.
- Access. A steep back section, a narrow side passage with no vehicle route, or a long flight of steps all add time. Gear goes in, waste comes out, and both take longer on a hard site.
- Frequency. A four-weekly round costs less per visit than a twice-yearly rescue, because nothing is ever allowed to get away.
- Green waste volume. A couple of bags of clippings is a different job to a trailer load, and whether removal is included or an add-on is the most common hidden gap between two quotes.
- Season. Growth stalls June to August and takes off in spring, so a plan that flexes with the seasons reflects the real work better than one flat schedule.
Comparing quotes properly
Two figures only become comparable once you know they are pricing the same job. Ask what tasks are actually included, whether green waste removal is in the price, what the visit frequency is, and whether the figure is fixed once agreed or can change on the day.
Why a first visit is priced differently
Photographs are not always fully indicative. A hedge that looked like one length in a photo turns out longer on the day, and that is normal rather than anybody being difficult about it.
