Start here, because it catches out more Auckland homeowners than anything else: kerbside collection does not cover garden waste. There is no green-waste bin included as standard, and it is not something you can request added.
Auckland Council's standard kerbside service covers rubbish, recycling and food scraps only. Council guidance is explicit that general garden waste cannot go in your household rubbish bin either, beyond a small amount of pest plant material. Plenty of other councils run kerbside green-waste collection, so it is an easy assumption to make, and it costs you a wasted trip to the kerb.
Your four actual options
- Private collection service. Subscription-based, a bin emptied on a cycle. Suits an ongoing garden producing steady, moderate volumes. A poor fit for a single large clearance, since you are buying an ongoing service to solve a one-off problem.
- Transfer station run. Cheapest per kilogram if you have the vehicle and the time. At stations such as East Tamaki, green waste is charged per load by weight, roughly $24 for a small load up to 30kg rising to around $80 for a full 400kg load, at 2026 rates including GST. Branches over 100mm in diameter, plus flax and bamboo, are excluded from the standard garden-waste rate and charged differently.
- Skip bin. For volume too large for repeated car trips when you would still rather load it yourself over a few days. Typically a few hundred dollars, priced by postcode and weight limit rather than a flat rate. Green waste does not compact the way household rubbish does, so bins fill faster than you expect.
- Commercial removal. Skips the loading, hauling and weighing entirely. Worth it when the job is a full clearance, awkward to access, or you do not want a skip on the driveway for a week.
Access decides it more often than volume
A pile at the back of a section with no vehicle access rules out a self-haul run no matter how light the load is. That is usually the deciding factor rather than cost.
Our approach
We quote green waste removal as a fixed price per job, because the cost genuinely depends on volume and access, not on how long loading takes. Separating bulky material like flax fronds, palm and thick branches from ordinary clippings before we arrive speeds up loading a lot, which is the same distinction the transfer stations make in their own pricing.
