A summer of Auckland growing conditions leaves a lot behind. Autumn is the point where you can see what actually happened, and where clearing it still buys you something before winter.
What summer leaves
Three months of warmth and humidity produce growth that nothing in the garden was planned around. Climbers reach further than anyone expected, self-seeded shrubs establish where nobody planted them, and beds that were defined in spring have lost their edges entirely.
Tree privet is the one to look for specifically. It seeds itself freely across Auckland gardens and reaches small-tree size within a couple of seasons, so a plant that was invisible last autumn can be a genuine removal job by this one.
Autumn or winter?
Both work, and they suit different situations.
Autumn is better when the problem is volume rather than structure. Growth is still identifiable, you can tell what is worth keeping, and clearing now means the garden goes into winter at a baseline rather than compounding through it. It is also more comfortable work than winter clay.
Winter is better for a genuine reclaim job. Deciduous cover drops away so you can see the bones of the section, growth has stalled so what you clear stays cleared, and sustained rain softens Auckland's volcanic clay enough that deep roots come out whole rather than snapping.
The practical rule: if you want it tidy for the next few months, clear in autumn. If the section has genuinely gone and needs resetting properly, wait for winter and do it once.
Watch what you disturb
Autumn is when wasps are at their most active and most aggressive, before the colony dies off through the cooler months. A nest built into dense summer growth is a real hazard in March and April in a way it simply is not in July.
Walk the area and watch for traffic before cutting into anything dense. This is the single biggest safety difference between an autumn clearance and a winter one, and it is worth knowing before you start rather than discovering it with a hedge trimmer running.
Deal with the disposal properly
A clearance produces more material than kerbside can take, and Auckland Council kerbside does not accept garden waste at all. Some of what comes out needs more care again: wandering willie, agapanthus and arum lily all resprout from fragments and survive standard composting, so they belong in a bag for rubbish rather than in green waste.
Our approach
We clear the heaviest material first and open a route to the truck before anything else, then work from the far end of the section back toward the vehicle so nothing gets carried over ground we have already done. Every clearance is a one-off with nothing to sign up to, quoted per job so the price is agreed before we start. Green waste removal is available as an add-on so the material leaves with us.
